Across the country, amid lawsuits and protests aimed at ICE action — including a so-called "National Shutdown" set for Friday — Indiana lawmakers
have advanced an immigration enforcement bill that, among other things, penalizes any local entities determined to be noncompliant with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts.
The bill, authored by Sen. Liz Brown, R-Fort Wayne, addresses what Brown called a "serious problem," though she rejected claims the effort targets immigrants broadly. The bill passed the Senate on party lines this week, and heads next to the House.
It's one of myriad bills still jockeying for a winning position before this year's short session crosses the finish line, which could come as early as the end of February. Check out all the coverage at Indiana Capital Chronicle for the latest.
In other news, the Lafayette Police Department arrested five people in connection to the Jan. 18 shooting of Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer and his wife Kimberly Meyer. Dave Bangert has more.
And finally, from the "what's old is new again" category, Mirror Indy reports construction crews working on IndyGo's Blue Line have uncovered train tracks once used by mule-powered streetcars. A popular route is a popular route, it seems, no matter the century.
Let us know about interesting things that are happening in your part of the state. As always, thanks for reading.

Immigration enforcement bill clears Senate |
Indiana Senate Bill 76 — a Republican-backed bill that would expand requirements for local and state governments to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement — passed 37-7, with all Democrats voting against. The bill comes at a time when the nation is embroiled in an ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) controversy. If adopted, the bill would give Indiana new ways to penalize those who fail to comply with federal agents. The bill is now with the Indiana House for a vote. Indiana Capital Chronicle has this story — and all the latest news from the Statehouse.
