No matter what part of the state you call home, you've quite likely heard about an effort to build a large, local data center. The giant operations are meeting a fair amount of resistance because of concerns about the farmland they consume and other environmental issues, even while the proposals often promise high-paying jobs. IndyStar reporters explain what's at stake, and why the data center issue seems to be so divisive.
Elsewhere, Gary and Lake County residents get to enjoy another season at the symphony, with a new conductor at the baton. Lamar Grear has roots in The Region, since both his parents were raised in Gary. Grear's tenure continues the more than eight decade tradition of symphonic music in the city.
We'll be off next week because of the Christmas holiday, but look for our return as we all welcome a new year on Jan. 1. Then, we'll share some stories from this past year that you may have missed, and we'll connect you to resources you should keep handy in 2026.
No matter how you celebrate, or what traditions are important to your family, we hope you get a chance to spend time with those who matter most to you.
As always, thanks for reading. |

The IndyStar reports on the ongoing debates that have seen local residents come together in ways that aren't common. Environmental concerns often bump up against proposed economic opportunities, but one thing seems to be clear: Hoosiers either love or hate data centers. |

Gov. Mike Braun, a Republican, was quoted in a statement after the vote that he "will be working with (President Trump) to challenge these people who do not represent the best interests of Hoosiers.” |

Mendoza wins IU's first Heisman |
|
That news is not surprising for most, especially Hoosier Nation. He's a star on the No. 1 team. But Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza is an even bigger star to many off the field — where he goes out of his way to help others, with a special focus on families affected by Multiple Sclerosis, a disease his own mother lives with. The Indy Star's Gregg Doyel has Mendoza's Heisman story. Also: IU gets its time on CBS' 60 Minutes. |
